DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
Whether you are just visiting the Fen or joining a workday, proper clothing is very important for your visit to the Fen. The trails are purposefully kept as minimal and as natural as possible. They are narrow, and the vegetation will brush against you. Some plants have thorns that will scratch bare legs or catch onto thin clothing. Always wear long pants, and consider jeans or cotton pants instead of nylon or other synthetics that snag easily.
It's a good idea to bring bug spray, water, and a hat when visiting in the summer. Consider sun screen if you plan to stay for awhile. Make sure to dress in layers in the winter, so that you don't get too cold from too few clothing or overheated from too much clothing. Overheating can be dangerous, as you will perspire while moving, but then quickly get chilled when you stand still. Gloves and a hat are also a good idea.
Workday Clothing
Wear old, durable clothes, boots or old shoes, and long pants. A baseball cap or sun hat is a good idea in summer and necessary when working near brushpiles in winter. Bring leather work gloves if you have them. We always have extras to share. In the summer, bring bug spray. In the winter, wear natural fiber clothing only, such as wool, denim or cotton. Synthetics such as nylon can melt when hit by sparks from burning brushpiles. Always bring water to drink.
